Regularly clearing your PC’s caches is a great way to improve its performance and keep it clutter-free. Here’s how you can do it in Windows 11.

A cache file is a temporary file created by various applications and services. These files are usually recreated when your apps need them, so clearing them shouldn’t cause any problems. As explained below, it is also possible to set Windows to automatically clear cache files for you.

How to Clear Your Cache on Windows 11

How to Use Disk Cleanup to Clear Cache

Windows 11’s built-in Disk Cleanup program is easy to clear various caches. Cache files are automatically identified by this tool and cleared automatically.

You can find the tool under the “Start” menu if you search for it. You need to click on it to access it.

Select the drive in which you have installed Windows 11 from the “Drives” drop-down menu that appears in the “Disk Cleanup” window. Once you have done that, click “OK.”

You will see a window called “Disk Cleanup.” Select all the boxes in the “Files to Delete” section to remove your cache files. Click “OK” at the bottom.

You can confirm the deletion of your cache by clicking “Delete Files” on the prompt that appears.

How to Clear the Microsoft Store Cache

As with other apps, the Microsoft Store also uses the PC’s cache. You will need to run an application from the Run box to remove these files.

Start by pressing Windows+R together to open the Run box.

Type the following into the Run box and press Enter: WSReset.exe

Once the Run box appears, a blank black window will appear on your screen. If it doesn’t close automatically, wait for it to appear again.

Your Microsoft Store cache will be cleared when the window closes.

Select “Privacy & Security” from the left sidebar in Settings.

Click “Location” under the “App Permissions” section of the “Privacy & Security” page.

Click “Clear” next to “Location History” on the “Location” page.

It’s that simple. Windows 11 will delete the cached location information.

Type the following command into Windows Terminal and click Enter. PowerShell and Command Prompt shells both support this command.

When the DNS cache is cleared, you will receive a success message.

You are done.

How to Automatically Clear Cache Using Storage Sense

You can automatically clear the cache on your PC using the Storage Sense feature in Windows 11. The feature lets you specify the type of cache you want to clear, and it will delete only those cache files.

You can access the feature by pressing the Windows+I keys together to launch the Settings app.

Navigate to the left sidebar and select “System.”

Select “Storage” from the “System” page.

Click “Storage Sense” in the “Storage” menu.

You can enable “Automatic User Content Cleanup” by going to the “Storage Sense” page and turning it on. The feature is enabled by doing this.

Choose which cache files you would like to be deleted on the same page. In addition to automatically clearing the Recycle Bin, the Downloads folder is also cleared.

When Storage Sense runs, it automatically clears the Recycle Bin and Downloads folder. You can run it right away by scrolling to the bottom of the current page. Select “Run Storage Sense Now” from the menu.

Storage Sense will declutter your computer based on the options you select.
